Greetings, Flagler County BFF Coalition!

We are excited to expand our Best Foot Forward pedestrian safety program into Flagler County with support from the Volusia Flagler TPO. As you may remember from a previous e-mail, our program will be selecting eight crosswalks throughout the county to monitor in 2025, and we will be tracking the rate at which drivers yield to pedestrians at those locations and evaluating the effect of education, engineering, and enforcement at those locations throughout the year.

To select these crosswalks, we will be holding an in-person crosswalk selection workshop at 1769 E Moody Blvd., Bldg 2 on Wednesday, January 22nd from 2pm – 4pm. This workshop hopes to bring together officials from traffic engineering, transportation, public safety, education, and enforcement from around the county to discuss potential crosswalk locations to include in the program for monitoring.

Your participation in this crosswalk selection workshop will strengthen our shared dedication to pedestrian safety and contribute to the overall success of the Best Foot Forward program, and your insights and perspectives will be invaluable in determining locations throughout the county to receive our intervention and monitoring. We would like to have a representative sample of crosswalks from throughout the county, so your attendance will be crucial in advocating for your local community.

Guidance in choosing potential crosswalk locations: At minimum, locations selected for evaluation must already have some type of crosswalk markings present on the road. Midblock crosswalks and ones at semi-controlled intersections make great candidates for data monitoring, countermeasure recommendations, and high-visibility enforcement. We can also evaluate signalized intersections if there’s a specific concern, but signalization tends to produce higher driver yield rates by default. Crosswalks with a lot of potential for foot traffic, such as near parks, trails, schools, transit stops, and shopping centers make excellent choices for evaluation.

We will review your crosswalk suggestions in-person on a projected screen where we can search and analyze each one on a map. By the end of the workshop, we hope to have eight locations for monitoring with representation from each city & county jurisdiction present. If you’d like your local crosswalks represented, please plan to send someone from your organization to attend. We look forward to working with you throughout 2025 to help make pedestrian crosswalks safer throughout the county.
